What's the best color for dog toys?
The best color for dog toys is blue or yellow. Dogs see blue and yellow clearly, but red, orange and green all shift toward the same dull yellow-brown, so a red ball on a lawn nearly disappears. Choose by what the toy lands on: blue or yellow on grass, blue on leaves, yellow on gray pavement.
Dog toy colors they can see
Dogs have two kinds of color-sensing cones where people have three. In 1989, Jay Neitz, Tim Geist and Gerald Jacobs found their peaks near 429 nm (violet-blue) and 555 nm (yellow-green). The veterinary ophthalmologist Paul Miller describes what that means for color: blues look blue, and everything from about 500 to 620 nm, which covers green, yellow and orange, is probably seen as yellow of different brightness. Red lies just past that range and probably looks like an even darker yellow-brown. Purple lands near blue. Pink loses its hue and drifts toward gray. The full story is in our guide to what colors dogs can see.
So a toy's color matters less than its contrast with the ground. A toy shows up if it is clearly lighter or darker than the background, or if it sits at a different point on the blue-yellow scale.
Do dogs also prefer certain colors? A 2025 study of 134 free-ranging dogs in India found they chose a yellow object over a blue or gray one, and went for yellow before a gray object that had food on it. That is one study in street dogs. We found no study showing that dogs find or fetch better with a yellow toy, so treat yellow as a tie-breaker and visibility as the real reason.
Best color for dog toys in grass
To compare toys, we took the colors from the toys in our test photos, ran them through the same dichromat model the Dog lens uses, and ranked each toy by how far its color sits from the background in the simulated view. It is a calculation on AI-generated pictures. It is not a test on dogs.
On the lawn, the blue and purple balls stand out most, followed by the yellow tennis ball. The white rope holds up. The orange ball and the pink bone land in the middle. The red and green balls come out closest to the grass, which matches the pattern you see when you drag the slider above.
Best toy color for your yard, trail or floor
Here is the same calculation across common surfaces. The lawn, carpet and oak floor come from our photos; for the other surfaces we used typical colors, so treat those rows as a guide.
| Where you play | Best toy colors | Hardest to see |
|---|---|---|
| Green lawn | Blue, purple, yellow | Green, red |
| Dry or late-season grass | Blue, purple | Green, red |
| Autumn leaves, mulch, dirt trails | Blue, purple, yellow | Red, green, orange |
| Sand or beach | Blue, purple | Pink, white, green |
| Snow | Blue, purple, yellow, orange | White, pink |
| Gray pavement or concrete | Yellow, orange | Pink |
| Beige carpet, light wood floor | Blue, purple, yellow | Pink, white, green |
| Dark wood floor | Yellow, blue, purple | Green, red, pink |
Red is the surprise. It fails against green and brown, because all of them collapse toward the same yellow-brown, but it shows up fine on snow and gray pavement. A toy in two colors, such as blue and yellow, works on almost any surface.
Pink is the other surprise. It does a middling job on grass because it is lighter than the lawn, then nearly vanishes on beige carpet and pale wood, where it turns the same gray-beige as the floor.

Are tennis balls a good color for dogs?
Yes. A tennis ball is yellow-green, which sits in the part of the spectrum where a dog's long-wave cone is most sensitive, and it is bright. On the lawn it ranked third in our calculation, behind only the blue and purple balls. Its edge shrinks on dry grass and sand, which are yellowish to a dog too. A blue ball is the better pick there.
Can dogs see glow-in-the-dark toys?
Probably, but we found no study that tested it, so this is reasoning from the dog's eye. Most glow coatings give off pale green light, and dogs likely see green as a shade of yellow, so a charged ball should look like a faint yellowish light.
In the dark, dogs lean on rod cells, which sense brightness but not color, plus a reflective layer behind the retina called the tapetum. Miller and Murphy's 1995 veterinary review credits dogs with better dim-light function than people. For night play, a light-up LED toy is brighter and steadier than a glow coating that fades as it runs down. We cover night vision in can dogs see in the dark.
What color toys are best for cats?
Cats do best with the same two colors. They have two cone types as well. In 1970, Daw and Pearlman trained cats to tell red and orange from cyan and found evidence for a blue-absorbing and a green-absorbing cone, so cat color vision is thought to work like a dog's. Red and green are hard to tell apart, and blue and yellow stand out. More on cats in how do cats see.
In our calculation on a gray sofa, the yellow mouse and the blue foil ball stood out most, and the red ribbon also showed up against the gray. The pink lattice ball blended in the most. Most cats go for movement first, so a feather that moves like prey is worth more than any color choice.

In a pet store aisle, you can check a toy before buying it. The Dog and Cat lenses in the app are free, and the camera shows a live simulation. The colors follow the cone data. Blur and field of view are exaggerated so they read on a phone screen, and nothing here shows exactly what an animal sees. No phone handy? The free web simulator does the same with a photo, and the photo stays in your browser.

What is the best color for dog toys?
Blue and yellow. Dogs see both clearly, while red, orange and green shift toward one dull yellow-brown and blend into grass, leaves and dirt. For the best odds, pick a toy that stands apart from the ground: blue or yellow on a lawn, blue on autumn leaves, yellow on gray pavement. A two-tone blue and yellow toy works almost anywhere.
Are red dog toys a bad choice?
Red is a poor pick on grass, leaves and dirt, where it turns a dark yellow-brown close to its surroundings. It works better on gray pavement or snow, because it looks like a dark yellowish toy against a neutral background. Red is not invisible to dogs. It is just easy to lose against green and brown.
Do dogs have a favorite toy color?
Possibly yellow. A 2025 study of 134 free-ranging dogs in India found they preferred a yellow object to a blue or gray one, and went for yellow before a gray object that had food on it. It is one study, in street dogs, and no study we found shows dogs fetch better with a yellow toy. Treat yellow as a good tie-breaker, with visibility as the main reason.
Can dogs see glow-in-the-dark toys?
Probably, as a faint yellowish glow, but we found no study that tested it. Most glow coatings give off pale green light, and dogs likely see green as a shade of yellow. In the dark, dogs rely on rod cells, which sense brightness only, and a reflective layer behind the retina. A light-up LED toy is brighter and steadier than a glow coating.
What color toys are best for cats?
Blue and yellow, like dogs. Cats also have two cone types, so their color vision is thought to work like a dog's, with red and green hard to tell apart. In practice, how a toy moves matters more to most cats than its color. Pink and gray-green toys blend into gray sofas and floors.
